How Plant-based Shredding Works
- Collection: Either we pick the paper up from your location or you drop the paper off at a DSS facility. If we pick the paper up, it remains secured in a locked compartment until it is unloaded in our shred room. Paper that is brought to us is immediately placed in a secure area.
- Destruction: Once paper has arrived at our facility it is lined up for shredding. Paper in secure DSS bins is emptied onto the shredder. Paper in boxes or other containers must first be emptied into gaylords, and then the entire gaylord is emptied onto the shredder. The massive amount of paper we shred and mix together precludes any chance of reconstruction. Shredded paper travels down a belt to a baler where it is pressed and shaped into a 1,000-pound paper bale.
- Recycling: Paper bales are loaded 44 at a time and sent for recycling into low-grade paper goods. This process guarantees all information is completely destroyed. For more information, watch our brief video explaining the recycling process.

24/7 CCTV Surveillance: Once any materials enter a DSS facility they are under continuous surveillance until they are destroyed, baled, and sent for recycling. This provides a clear chain of custody, proof of destruction and protection against any mishandling.
Separate Access: DSS facilities all have coded access. However, our Plant-based shredding activities have an extra layer of security with separate coded doors that separate them from the rest of the facility and limit access even further.
Employee Checks: Our employees are the true backbone of our business, so we take extra precautions before and after hiring to make sure we have the right people in place. For example, all employees undergo extensive criminal background checks and drug tests before being hired as well as ongoing random checks. Also, our training process centers around the proper handling and destruction of materials, and all DSS workers sign confidentiality agreements to protect customer information.
